Keeping up with all the latest and greatest creative enhancements to the web design experience is important and sometimes overwhelming for some peers in the industry.
To help with the never ending wheel of design trends, here’s a few of the latest web design must-haves to keep you ahead of your competitors!
1. Bigger and bolder is better
Typography plays one of the biggest roles on websites, not only does it have to be legible and set the design tone for the website, but it also sets the balance between images and impacts the overall look and feel.
Lately the trend of ‘bigger and bolder is better’ is dominating the creative scene, by being loud and unapologetically in your face.
The overall outcome of this kind of design is that you can tell which designers are good and which designers are bad. It is a challenging task and only a few will get it right.
The right font can add personality to your website and make it look more modern and even sometimes chic.
This design trend is all about choosing the right font, it will make or break your website.
2. Animations and illustrations
Web animations have been coming up in trends for the last few years, adding so much fun and uniqueness to websites.
Animations can be used differently, such as dragging the mouse indicator to activate a content or display update on the page, or by including playful text interactions for a similar effect.
Web animations are here to make your website more appealing, bringing more life and add more engagement to your website.
Also, don’t be afraid to really have fun and be creative, animations and illustrations grab viewers attention and excite people.
3. Website interactivity
One of the most common trends you’re likely to see are Mouse Interactions. Used by the website design and development industry since 2017 and still going strong!
Interactivity is favored, even in a world full of touch screens, nothing beats a desktop… for now.
It’s an instant attention grabber that most web developers make use of as an industry standard.
This trend won’t be going away any time soon.
Mouse interactions keep the user engaged and surprised at every little click or hover and keeps them wanting more.
When mouse interactions are done correctly, they can be used as a guide for users, to focus their attention on a specific section of featured content, and often tell a story on your Homepage.
4. Minimalist web design
Less is now more
Minimalist website design shows us that sometimes less is more.
It utilises more negative space with a clean and easy navigation.
It shows us that simplicity is best compared to an extremely detailed website design, which can easily overwhelm a user.
Minimalist website are designed to create a clean and refreshing style, including only elements that are necessary.
This style of design often includes a limited colour palette which is used to highlight certain sections of a website, making it clean and easy to read with contemporary Sans Serif fonts (Minimalist)..
High quality images are essential to keep the look and feel of the brand identity in minimalist design.
Images that resonate with the brand and the brands message will be more effective.
Negative space such as white space is most common in minimalist design, an empty space in the design will keep the users attention on the content and will guides the viewers’ eye to sections that include important information, like ‘Call to actions’ (CTA) that we want them to interact with, to find out more, etc.
5. 3D
3D effects and elements have been around for a while but with the rise of more advanced software and AI, developers and designers are now able to take it to the next level.
We are now able to create a more memorable fun experience with 3D elements.
3D is able to create depths and dimensions to any website design with a visually stunning layout.
It has the ability to turn any design into something more ‘advanced’ or ‘futuristic’ or sometimes even ‘Retro’.
The possibilities are endless with this web trend.
In our opinion, the 3D trend is possibly the most widely used in the web industry, by bringing animated shapes and illustrations to life, such as CTA buttons, Open and close interactions, Menus and mouse effects, etc.
E-commerce websites are starting to utilise the 3D effects to showcase their products by rotating the product when viewing.
Take your website design to the next level by creating realism 3D art, using lighting and shadow effects to create an exciting experience for each user as they scroll.
6. AI Design
Love or hate the impact that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has had on the design industry over the past few months, this trend is currently only in its infancy stage and the future looks incredibly promising.
Without understanding the constantly evolving ‘Machine’ that is AI, it has already impacted most Design Software and Social Media apps, by making them more user-friendly and interactive for visitors.
You can even use AI to edit a PDF these days. But worry not fellow designers!… they haven’t replaced us yet.
Now is the perfect opportunity for us to upgrade our creative skills and include AI as a design tool.
We believe that AI is only going to improve over time, and it is essential to grow with it (or be left behind).
7. Organic Shapes
Organic Shapes only really made it into the trends recently.
Organic shapes are a really nice way to make your website seem more unique and interesting,
It makes the user feel warm and welcomed by breaking away from the typical boxy, square-shaped, traditional corporate layouts.
Organic shapes are a great tool for separating sections or brining more life into an image as a background border or the colorful ‘Pop’ that every website needs.
8. Dark Mode
Dark mode is one of the more recent trends, as most app designs now typically have a dark mode for their users.
The multiple advantages of dark mode is to save battery life and if you’re a person who is constantly on the computer, dark mode is an eye saver! Literally.
It is also a great way to stand out from the generic website look and feel.
9. Chat Bots
This trend is subjective… Some people like it and find it useful. while others hate it and find it annoying,
It’s easy to hate chat bots, but sometimes they can be really useful and save you time, when you are looking for something specific.
When a user needs more help to find what they are looking for, chat bots can be successful in guiding the user by providing suggested answers and hyperlinks to specific featured content tags.
A chat bot usually pops up when the viewer starts scrolling down the page, to offer assistance.
Users of all ages can find this useful and sometimes the chat bot illustrations are really cute characters.
10. Brutalism
One of the new trends to enter the race is Brutalism, mostly inspired from 90’s European punk rock and Y2K aesthetic,
Brutalism has been taking the world by storm.
If you are looking for unpolished, bold, loud colours and simple design, Brutalism is for you.
Brutalism has a way of catching your attention with odd designs and layouts, but somehow seem pleasing and structured.
Brutalism goes against everything your design lecturer taught you in college, and goes against the traditional grain.
It can really be a test for designers to create this type of style, especially if they have never done so before.
The point of Brutalism is to break the rules, there are no boundaries and no grids, it is in your face.
Brutalism is often met with chaotic borders (not structured), lack of organisation, and images overlapping text, bold and monospaced typography.
We look forward to witnessing how these design trends will evolve over time, and we are excited to implement them to create unique solutions for our clients moving forward.
