Wondering what fresh visuals will be taking over our screens this 2020?
Not only are we celebrating a new decade but also how far designers and developers have come to clearing the clutter and enhancing web functionality within website design to provide us with out-of-this-world experiences.
Here are five game-changing website design trends we found that will dominate 2020. These trends include breaking the rules a bit and embracing the now easily accessible and affordable technological advances such as 3D animation and imagery.
1. Less Is More
We are constantly overwhelmed by technology and the information it heaves at us. This info-overload has been a never-ending story, and quite frankly it’s getting old.
Designers have been praising the minimalist approach for a while now, but now we are combining minimal approaches in layout and graphics with elements that showcase brand personality. Designers and developers are ditching anything that does not serve a direct and meaningful purpose towards your brand. Not only is simplistic design aesthetically pleasing, but it will also make your website load faster and as a result create a better user experience. Feel free to read another one of our articles on how to make your website lightning-fast.
An example below shows how our KNOWN designers and developers have minimalised a website layout to its essentials through utilising negative space, while still capturing the brand’s personality. Learn more about what it takes to create a modern minimalist website here.
2. The Human Element
Online shopping has become such an overlord in the land of consumption that much attention is being paid to how online shoppers, well, shop online.
According to Guiding Metrics, online shoppers spend +/- 3 minutes on an e-commerce website and the shopping cart abandonment rate is a whopping 71.2%. If your site does not communicate to the real-life humans on the opposite side of the screen to make them feel comfortable enough to insert their banking details – you’ve got a 35% chance of people leaving your site.
Therefore, shop owners are lining up to tick their “Human Element” box when it comes to creating a shopping experience online. Here is an example of how, MIKO, an e-commerce website that we designed and developed uses relatable human imagery and phrases such as, “FIND YOUR MIKO” as content to personify the site.
3. Ethical Design & Visual Ergonomics
Let’s face it, we face it all the time. Our screens probably get more face-time than they should on a healthy basis, and the public is experiencing ethical and ergonomic implications as a result. Designers and developers are now prioritising an ergonomic and ethical lens when creating online experiences.
The “Dark Mode” trend, seen in the example below, is one example of how designers are attempting to lessen the strain on our eyes without having to cut back on time spent with our beloved devices.
The decisions designers and business owners make when designing an online platform, are on behalf of the people using the website. Making sure your site is following an ethical framework and treating your users with cyber-respect is where we can help. We as designers and developers take pride in our understanding of protecting your website against potential threats and making sure your users feel safe while visiting your site.
4. Experimenting With Extremes
This decade we want to take up some serious space. A new trend that marched its way into our top 5 is experimenting with extremes in layout and especially typography.
Web designers are stepping out of their comfort zone of praising perfectionism and started experimenting more with large text, bold imagery, and loud statements. Design features like bright colours and illuminated or duotone images have been rapidly catching our eyes.
Not only are the extreme approaches more eye-catching, but it also promotes a bold personality that shows your clients and customers that you confidently have what it takes.
An example below shows how using duotone images in a large-banner format can be used to make a bold statement. Duotone image editing is also a great way of making any image fit into your brand colour and personality.
5. Combining Photography With Graphics
Mixing life-like photographs with custom drew illustration or graphics is a new trend that not only invites the viewer in to admire beautiful art but also adds quirk or personality to your business presentation.
This trend can range from messy and artistic hand-drawn illustrations combined with photography, to simplified and professional graphics or shapes combined with photography. No matter the brand type, this trend will help your customers to relate to you as an innovative individual. The example below shows how photographs combined with illustration can add personality and customisation to a brand.
This year we are definitely celebrating uniqueness while following our favorite trends. Send us a message to let us know what trends you love. We’d love to hear from you!
